Don’t Miss Out! Holiday Shipping and Mailing Deadlines for this Season

Keep an eye out for these End-of-Year dates.

With the holidays around the corner, it’s time to think about more than just the gifts—mailing them on time is equally important! Whether you’re shipping packages to friends and family or sending out holiday cards, planning ahead is key to ensuring your items arrive by the big day. Overwhelmed? We’ve got you covered with ship-dates and shipping checklist.

Here’s a Quick Guide to Help You Navigate Holiday Shipping Deadlines for 2024

These recommended ship-dates are U.S. Domestic only—with delivery by December 24th. Always double check with your local couriers.

USPS (United States Postal Service):

  • First-Class Mail: December 18
  • Ground Advantage: December 18
  • Priority Mail: December 19
  • Priority Mail Express: December 21

UPS:

  • Ground: December 18
  • 3-Day Select: December 19
  • 2nd Day Air: December 20
  • Next Day Air: December 21

FedEx:

  • Ground Economy: December 13
  • Ground: December 17
  • Express Saver (3-day): December 19
  • 2-Day Services: December 20
  • Overnight Services: December 23

What’s Ground Shipping?

It’s exactly how it sounds! Shipping is based on (mostly) regular truck route schedules. The timeframe varies based on the Ship-From and Ship-To address, with the longest transit time being about 7 Days.

For example, Massachusetts to California typically takes 5 Days, whereas Massachusetts to New York is about 1-Day.

Why Ship Early?

Peak production and shipping happens around the holidays. High volumes mean busier, while winter is prone to unpredictable inclement weather. These are potential causes for delays.

Remember, couriers are only human! So, the earlier the better. Listed dates are subject to change without notice. Always double-check with the carrier as your target ship-date approaches. Be mindful of store/drop-off location hours as well as their last truck loading times of the day. Drop-offs afterhours will lead to further delay.

Making Holiday Shipping More Affordable

Reuse old boxes and packing supplies where possible and encourage your recipients to recycle or reuse the packaging. That old box in your closet from your online shopping spree? Use it! That nice box you “might need later”? Later is now! This cuts down the cost of having to buy new materials.

Also consider bundling multiple gifts into one shipment to reduce costs, or use regional carriers for shorter distances. If you’re sending multiple packages, loyalty programs like USPS Click-N-Ship or UPS My Choice can provide additional discounts and perks. Planning your shipping strategy ahead of time will save both money and last-minute stress.

Not only is it less stressful to stay ahead, but who doesn’t want a bigger gift-giving budget?

Time to Get Started!

Now that you’ve looked up the shipping deadlines, you’re already ahead of the game. Time to follow through with the packaging and handling. We’ve broken it all down for you. Rest easy by following this tips and tricks checklist.

Holiday Shipping: A Handy Checklist

Avoid Last-Minute Rushes

Keep extra packing materials and supplies on hand for unexpected needs.
Schedule package pickups if you can’t make it to a drop-off location.
Check local shipping centers for extended hours during the holidays.

Be Prepared for Surprises

Verify delivery times for international shipments, as they often require extra time.
Have a backup gift plan in case of delays, like an e-gift card or a digital greeting.

Choose the Right Shipping Option

Determine the carrier and service that meets your timeline (e.g., USPS Priority Mail, UPS 2-Day, etc.).
Compare shipping rates if budget is a concern.

Prepare Your Package

Use a sturdy cardboard box to protect your items during transit.
Add cushioning material (bubble wrap, newspaper, kraft paper) to prevent movement inside the box.
Seal the box with strong packing tape along all edges and seams.

Address It Correctly

Use waterproof ink, permanent marker, or printed labels to prevent smudging.
Write the recipient’s address clearly, including apartment or unit numbers if applicable. Check it twice!
Include your return address in case the package is undeliverable.

Add Extras for Protection

Include a copy of the recipient’s address inside the package, in case the external label is damaged.
Consider insurance for high-value or fragile items.
Use “Fragile” or “Handle with Care” labels if needed.

Ship Early and Track It

Send your package as early as possible to avoid delays.
Opt for a shipping service with tracking, and save the tracking number.
Sign up for delivery updates online (phone or email notifications)

At the end of the day, what matters the most is the compassion. Delays can still happen. Though they’re not ideal, it’s a time to celebrate the spirit of love. Winter is the perfect atmosphere for cozy vibes and showing you care.
