Your Safety Gear Should Work As Hard As You Do.
Which ANSI Hi-Vis Class Is Right for Your Job?
Whether you’re directing traffic, working roadside, responding to emergencies, or operating equipment in low-light conditions, your high-visibility apparel is one of your most important pieces of safety equipment.
ANSI/ISEA 107 standards classify hi-vis garments based on the level of visibility needed for different work environments. Wearing the right class helps ensure you’re seen by drivers, equipment operators, and coworkers when it matters most.
Your safety gear should work as hard as you do.
From selecting the right ANSI-rated garments to adding your company branding, 1-Stop Design Shop is your one-stop source for customized hi-vis apparel. We’ll help you choose the right products for your work environment and ensure every logo and identifier is applied without compromising safety compliance.
Here’s a quick guide to the four ANSI hi-vis classes.
Type P, Class 2 – Public Safety & Emergency Response
Designed specifically for first responders, Type P garments provide high visibility while allowing greater mobility.
Ideal for:
- Police officers
- EMS personnel
- Fire departments
- Emergency response teams

These garments are designed to accommodate duty belts, radios, and other equipment while still meeting visibility requirements.

Class 2 garments provide enhanced visibility during daylight, poor weather, and low-light conditions, helping reduce the risk of accidents.
Type R, Class 2 – Everyday Roadside & Utility Work
If you work around traffic but aren’t constantly exposed to high-speed vehicles, Class 2 is likely what you’ll wear.
Common jobs include:
- Road maintenance
- Municipal crews
- Railroad workers
- Airport ground personnel
- Warehouse and service workers
Type R, Class 3 – High-Speed Traffic & Heavy Equipment
Class 3 offers the highest level of visibility for roadway workers.
It’s designed for employees who work:
• Near high-speed traffic
• Around heavy construction equipment
• On highway projects
• In utility and emergency response operations

These garments feature additional fluorescent material and reflective striping that wraps around your torso and arms, making you easier to see from every direction—even when you’re moving.

Non-ANSI hi-vis apparel delivers enhanced visibility, comfort, durability, and customization options at a cost-effective price, making it a practical choice for organizations that want a professional look without the need for ANSI compliance.
Hi-Vis Color Doesn’t Always Mean ANSI-Compliant
Not all high-visibility apparel is ANSI-rated. Non-ANSI hi-vis garments use bright fluorescent colors, such as safety yellow, orange, and lime, to improve visibility but do not meet ANSI/ISEA 107 compliance standards. They’re ideal for lower-risk work environments where ANSI certification isn’t required.
Ideal for:
- Warehouses and distribution centers
- Manufacturing
- Landscaping
- Delivery services
- Event staff
- School crossing volunteers
- Retail and maintenance
